Attainable luxury: how to make your home feel luxurious on a budget

Contrary to popular belief, making a luxurious home is a task that does not need to be expensive. The selections you make in textiles, textures, and other design elements can make all the difference. Here are several tips that will help you create a luxurious home without going over your budget.

  1. Hang your draperies close to the ceiling

High ceilings are a coveted feature often found in luxury homes. If your house lacks this, do not fret. You can still create the illusion of having high ceilings without doing extensive renovations.

All you need to do is invest in good-quality long curtains, then hang them up as close to the ceiling as possible. Install the hardware several inches higher than the window frame or as high as the space allows. By doing so, you will make any space look tall and elegant.

Your choice in curtains will also play a role. Stay away from heavy and dark colored draperies. Instead, choose sheer ones in neutral colors. They will still let some natural light in while making the space look cozy.

  2. Keep shelves, surfaces, and open storage organized

Mess can make any room feel inexpensive and chaotic so, as much as possible, keep clutter away. That does not mean, however, that you should not show off your personal collections as well as photographs and artwork.

Carefully curate books in your shelves and decorative elements for surfaces and open storage. For coffee and side tables, a few but classic pieces you love to look at will do the trick.

Keep your personal belongings and other household items organized as well. Things will be much easier to find whenever you need them. It will also make you feel better.

  3. Liven up rooms with fresh flowers or greenery

Fake ones will simply not do. A quick trip to the local florist or even home improvement store will help you freshen up your place with fresh flowers or plants.

  4. For living spaces and bedrooms, add throw pillows in different sizes and textures

The word “luxurious” also means extremely comfortable or enjoyable, and what better way to make living spaces and bedrooms look and feel as such than by adding throw pillows?

It is, however, easy to make a couple of mistakes. Instead of matching sets of covers and pillows in the same sizes, opt for variety. For instance, you can add two to three large pillows in the same texture, then add a couple of smaller pillows covered in a different fabric to add dimension to a bed or a sofa.

Have fun with patterns or go neutral but work with complementary hues. If you are not sure which color palette to use, look to the seasons for inspiration. Warm neutrals, however, are the safest option.

  5. Hang artwork on the walls

Bare walls are boring, while walls overladen with too many decorations (be it paints, photographs, or other collectibles) can look too busy and disordered.

When hanging artwork on your walls, I recommend finding the middle ground. Survey a room you would like to decorate and identify the best areas to hang art, then fill them accordingly. Here are a couple of ideas on how to display your budding art collection.

  6. Be brave with your lamp and lighting choices

Trade standard stock lampshades and lighting with more interesting designs. Doing so will add some dimension to any room and make each space feel different and unique.

However, do not be too adventurous with your lighting choices. Go for different styles, but make sure they go well with each other for a cohesive overall look. This way, you are not only lighting up your home. You are adding eye-catching decorative elements as well.

Do not be afraid to make a statement

Have fun and take chances. Luxuriously designed and decorated homes do not come in just one style or color palette. Find a style that you like and keep the tips I shared above in mind. In no time at all, you will create a luxurious home that will also feel undeniably you.
