Greater Atlanta’s growing reputation as the Hollywood of the South has gained more traction with the recent sale of a historic, but long-neglected facility in the fast-growing neighborhood of Kirkwood.
In June 2017, Atomic Entertainment, LLC closed a deal to purchase Pullman Yard (also known as Pratt-Pullman Yard) from the Georgia Building Authority (GBA). The Los Angeles-based company bought the property for $8 million.
Atomic Entertainment aims to build an exciting mixed-use complex with film studio facilities on the site. The rebuild is projected to cost more than $100 million.
All Aboard: A Brief History of Pullman Yard
Pullman Yard is the largest undeveloped property on the eastern fringe of Atlanta. The 27-acre site includes 11 buildings, preserving Kirkwood’s ties to its agricultural, railroad, and industrial roots.
Its history dates back to 1904, when it was first developed as a sugar and fertilizer plant. And in 1922, the Pullman Passenger Rail Company acquired the complex for use as a service and repair facility for its railway system, setting the stage for years of industrial use by various transportation companies.
GBA assumed ownership and control of the property in 1990, only allowing use of the space for a variety of film projects in recent years. Some of the most recognizable Hollywood films that owe their success to Pullman Yard include The Fast and the Furious and The Hunger Games film franchises.
Full Steam Ahead: Pullman Yard’s Newest Chapter
Spearheaded by the husband-and-wife film production team Adam Rosenfelt and Maureen Meulen, Atomic Entertainment envisions a major facelift for Pullman Yard, while keeping the old railyard’s best features and most recognizable structures.
The main features of the redevelopment include:
- A central green space where movies and live concerts will be shown and staged
- A full-fledged film studio complex with sound stage
- A food bazaar and retail space occupying former train bays
- Offices, co-working spaces, and startup incubators
- Accommodations for film crews
